The Serenity Prayer

We use the Serenity Prayer at Cypress Hospice for many of the same reasons we use lavender and the Cypress tree as symbols in our practice. This prayer has a spiritual significance in our philosophy of care.

In fact, we believe that hospice care is holistic, including a focus on physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the individual not limited to any specific religion or dogma. We help patients celebrate and embrace the spiritual significance of their lives and relationships, especially when time is in question.

We have found that the Serenity Prayer helps both our patients and our staff live in a moment-to-moment tranquility. We take the words, “Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time,” and infuse them into our practice, reminding ourselves and our patients that every day we wish to Celebrate Life's Journey.

God Grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
