7 Fun Summer Activities for Seniors

Written by Danielle Shaffstall | Jul 11, 2022 1:00:00 PM

As the weather improves and we transition from the rainy spring season to a sunshine-filled summer, we all want to get out there and reintroduce ourselves to nature. Summer is reinvigorating, and there are so many ways to get the most enjoyment out of this amazing time of year.

At Generations Senior Living, we’re a family-owned and operated organization that is dedicated to creating the freedom for seniors to live life to its fullest. As part of our services and amenities, our senior living communities host a variety of social programs and activities.

So, what can seniors do to keep busy in the warmer months? Taking inspiration from this list, you can find fun summer activities for seniors to get the most out of this beautiful season! And keep reading to learn about our new VIP program and all the benefits it includes.

1. Take a Walk Outside

Few things come close to feeling the warm sun against your skin, a cool breeze blowing through your hair, and the smell of the great outdoors during the summertime. Not only is taking a walk a fun way to spend time with friends and get outside, but there are also some great health benefits of going on these little adventures.

Some studies suggest that spending time outside can improve a healthy immune system, memory and even support creativity! Beautiful Coe Lake next to Generations Senior Living of Berea also makes quite the backdrop for an evening walk as you see the sun set across the water. Our walking club can vouch for that.

2. Go on a Day Trip

It’s always a shame to waste a beautiful day, so why not plan a day trip to the local flea market or mall? Or you could plan a nice lunch at a restaurant patio to enjoy the weather. If it’s too warm, take the shopping indoors to rest with some air conditioning before hopping to the next stop on your day trip.

Both Generations Senior Living of Berea and Generations Senior Living of Strongsville have a wide variety of activities to have fun, memorable day trips all summer long.

3. Play Lawn Games

Summer brings out the winner in all of us, so why not engage in some friendly competition? Lawn games are a great way to bring out our competitive side with some light-hearted fun. From cornhole to bocce ball, there are so many lawn games that are easy to set up and unwind with on a cool summer afternoon.

4. Bird Watching & Nature Observation

Bird watching and other forms of nature observation are more versatile than most people know. It’s one of the most engaging outdoor and indoor summer activities for seniors. You can sit outside or go for a walk to observe birds and other critters. And you can easily bird watch from the comfort of your air-conditioned room when it’s too hot outside. All you need is a room with a good view—and at Generations, we have plenty of those.

Nature observation is a great way to appreciate the beauty of the environment around us and engage with the natural world in a new way.

5. Start a Garden

The summer is known as the growing season. Whether you have a green thumb or not, gardening is a great pastime. Not only will gardening provide fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables for nutritious, home-cooked meals, it has its own health benefits as well. Gardening can lower stress and raise serotonin. Some studies even suggest that it may boost heart and brain health and may lead to a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes and forms of dementia, like Alzheimer’s.

Using raised garden boxes and the right tools for whichever plants you wish to cultivate can make the activity much less physically demanding for seniors with mobility and joint issues, while having the act of gardening remain just as enjoyable.

6. Enjoy a Concert

Name a better pair than great weather and great music. It’s pretty difficult, right? Music is great on its own, but it just sounds better when you can enjoy it in a beautiful setting with others. Whether it’s at a large venue or at the local park with some local talent, a concert can make your day.

With the VIP Membership Program at Generations Senior Living, you’ll have access to outdoor concerts, along with indoor concerts for when the weather isn’t so cooperative. (More on this program below.)

7. Start a Book Club

Whether you enjoy sitting out on the patio with a cool breeze or inside at your favorite chair with a warm cup of tea, reading is a wonderful way to spend your time during the summer. What makes this experience even better is getting together with friends or others in your senior living community. Find a book you all are interested in and get together every week to discuss the book and share your thoughts!
