Yes, we’ve all done it.  Using the internet to self-diagnose an unusual ache, pain, or nagging cough. Unfortunately, this may be causing more harm than good.

There are dangers to self-diagnosing via the internet that can lead to:

  • Improper diagnoses
  • Improper self-treatment
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Delay of treatment for a serious medical condition
  • Misinformation

According to the Oxford Dictionary the definition of a cyberchondriac is a person who compulsively searches the internet for information on real or imagined symptoms of illness.

The Internet is a powerful tool. There are many advantages to searching the Internet. But as we know, tools can be used improperly. Be mindful of what your body is telling you and seek proper medical attention.

Just as we recommend you seek professional advice for ailments, we also suggest you seek professional advice to learn more about skilled nursing, assisted living and hospice services.  The Internet is an amazing resource, but nothing compares to a personal visit and speaking one to one with professionals in the field.
